Behind the Badge and surviving Los Angeles

I am a young female surviving life in hectic, fast-paced Los Angeles. I am surviving new marriage, as well as life married to an LAPD Officer, and with that comes the media and politics. I survive working and living in LA as well as seeking knowledge and striving to lead a healthy , organic and stress-free as possible life, which isn't easy when working in the cut-throat corporate world or being married to an LAPD Officer.

As far as Mayor, I’m not that far educated in politics to say or know exactly how things work but for one…I would keep pushing to hire more Officers. In the process of hiring more Officers one large worry is bringing down the training quality of the LAPD to hire so many so fast.

This, of course, isn’t something we want either, we want to maintain the highest quality of training and even build on that.

Here are a few of my ideas that would go into the training and hiring of Officers in the LAPD and any other Dept. as well:

#1. When hiring there are evaluations, great. But people change so I suggest evaluations by a therapist and testing done ever two years.
#2. Mandatory therapy once a year for 6 weeks ( 1 session a week) through out career. For both Officer and spouse/significant other. Separately and together.
#3.Classes for spouse/significant other’s before accepting Officer into Academy for both cop and spouse and other family to know what to expect and ways to handle it as well as reading material, etc. Mandatory therapy sessions , individual and couples before hiring for several weeks.
#4.When an Officers home life seems to be in trouble mandatory therapy sessions again for both Officer and spouse, individual and couples. ( a stressful home life leads to a pre-occupied Officer which means danger on the job).
#5.Updated articles, books and info sent home to the spouse .
#6.Open communication between the spouse and the Dept.
#7.When trouble seems to be going on with the Officer ( such as drinking, stress, failing on the job, concerned partners and co-workers bringing up problems with an Officer, etc) mandatory therapy, classes, etc.
#8. Anger management classes are also a good thing to make mandatory if and when needed or possibly needed.
#9. More therapy locations and time’s that work better around schedules ( right now there are only 2 LAPD therapy locations and only something like 9-5 hours which don’t work with my work schedule and it takes me 3 hours to get to and from the locations due to me taking public transportation).

For the gang’s I would make gang awareness a bigger issue, to me these are terrorists on our homeland, MS-13 has even been recruited by Al Quida type terrorist groups and is the largest gang in America as well as the most dangerous and fastest growing.

#1. Start in the schools.
Have FBI agents, Local Officers and other professionals speak on the gang issues as well as drugs, drinking, violence, etc. not just once a year but several times. Even have ex-gang members and drug users quest speak, etc.
Have kids in the schools write an essay of what they want to be when they grow up. Have them write an essay of gangs and drugs, etc. ( you’ll get allot of their views this way).
Have them write An essay on stopping gangs, drugs, etc.

#2.Have more city held after school projects, held at community centers and the YMCA, etc. Have volunteers and more sports, awareness programs, etc.

#3. Gun collection programs .
#4. Kids and other community write essays for improvement in the city and in the LAPD and the gang and drug related issues.

#5. If holding after school programs and hiring more officers and all the above issues means hiring more people then that puts more people in employment in the long run less drugs and gangs , etc would also mean less Police Power needed anyways and less kids growing up and ending up costing tax dollars in prisons.

#6. Ok, for my own benefit LESS CONSTRUCTION ON THE STREETS!.

#7. More public relations from the Mayors office in the schools, on the streets, etc.

#8. Clean up neighborhood. Yes this takes money and manpower but by not doing it we lose money as well, we spend more on Police Power, lose on housing costs/values and taxes. Etc.
So, EXTRA Police power cruising and walking the neighborhoods, talking to the kids hanging out in the summer time and so on. Private security, sheriffs as well.
Better control over bums and drugs, prostitutes and so-on not just from the Police but also from the community.
Regular community meetings on ways and ideas to help. Then better advertisement on these meetings as well as after school projects, etc.

Better schools, more computers and smaller classes, higher salaries for teachers but also stricter guidelines for them. More books. Fund raisers held by the city and schools for books and supplies and volunteer sign ups for after school projects and supplies for them.
More money going into schools.

Idea’s I like are after school projects at the YMCA and community centers. Volunteers and even hired employee’s. Sports ( I always see baseball fields empty).
Churches to outreach more.
Library programs. ( I grew up living near a library that had an outdoor theater stage and the community college acting division would hold Shakespeare plays for free and the crowd that turned out was always great, they would also have food and face painting ,etc.)

Another thing I’d like are graffiti art classes and projects at a community center or whatnot, where anyone can go and then an art show for the community can be held to raise money for the community center and more after school projects and so on. ( the art could be done on canvas, plaster, sheet rock, wood, etc). this would let those with artistic talent express themselves ( I would suggest inviting recruits from local colleges and schools) in a more positive way ( even awards could be given by the city for specific type of art contests).
City held essay contests as well are an idea (on subjects like what would you do as a mayor).

Community garden projects ( especially for children and elderly).

Open up or re-vamp community centers and YMCA’s and let the kids decorate it and come up with ideas for programs then give them the job of finding volunteers for those activities.

More job recourses ( such as the type held in Burbank at the city hall Annex office) where they provide free recourses of computers and fax machines and copy machines to print resumes , search for and apply for jobs ( phones too).

Tougher welfare regulations. ( like, if a mother is applying for welfare she only gets it for a certain time, she has to look for and get a job and work at one in a certain amount of time or it’s also all regulated and watched over/checked on by an employee, like a social worker, and that daycare would be provided as well for a certain amount of time, etc).
Also the “social worker” would be able to better prevent food stamps from being sold fro drugs.

Tougher laws for drug users and gang members.
Tougher laws for Illegal Aliens.

There’s a start, I’ll post more at another time.
